Earth Day Events Are Planned At Huband Park Elementary School

Earth Day Events Are Planned At Huband Park Elementary School
In preparation for Earth Day, April 22nd, the Environment Club at Huband Park Elementary is working hard at planning all sorts of events. For starters, we are encouraging students and staff to come to school in an environmentally friendly way all week, but especially on Earth Day. This means taking the bus, riding a bike, walking, or carpooling. These are all ways we can reduce our carbon emissions.
Earth Day at our school will start with a sharing assembly in the gym, and open to parents, at 9:00 a.m. Our school is learning "Island Home", a song written by local singer/songwriter Helen Austin with input from Environment Club members. The song focuses on what students love about the Valley and how we can live healthy lifestyles, enjoying and protecting our island home. The Environment Club is also performing a skit, written by one of its members, at the assembly.
In the hallway, we are putting up a "pledge banner". This is where students and staff can write their Earth Day pledge - their personal commitment to a change they are making to help the environment. This could be anything from packing a garbage-free lunch to taking the bus to, and from, school each day.
In celebration of Earth Day, we are planting small trees and flowers in four planters at the front of our school. This will create a colourful, living greeting for students, staff and parents as the enter the school each day. It is also a small addition to the effort of converting CO2 to oxygen and a reminder of the further planting we need to do. We are excited about seeing this project complete and keeping it as an Earth Day legacy for years to come.
To recognize the environmental efforts that students are making, we will be monitoring class behaviour and having a class contest. We want to find the class that creates the least garbage, keeps lights off as much as possible, has the most kids who walked, wheeled or bussed to school, and who come to school wearing "earth" colours. Prizes will be awarded to the winning classes.
Daily prizes will also be awarded in the Environmental Trivia contest which we will be holding in the library. Students will test their environmental knowledge for Earth Day glory.
One class is organizing a book swap for Tuesday and Wednesday. Students can bring "gently used" books to trade with other students. A great way to recycle!
With all the fun we are planning at Earth Day at Huband Park, we hope to get everyone thinking about the many ways we can change our behaviour to be more "earth friendly". This is our school's Earth Day effort for a better world.
